DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that after he mailed himself to freedom from Virginia to Philadelphia, Henry Box Brown learned how to read and to write?  He wrote a book about his life, traveled extensively, and gave speeches around the country.  Narrative of the Life of Henry Box Brown, by Henry Box Brown, Henry Louis Gates, and Richard Newman (Hardcover - Mar 1, 2002) Read more Click here.

Did you know that many slaves freed themselves in unusual ways? Biddy Mason walked with her children and slave owner from Mississippi to California and learned, after their arrival, that California was a “free” state, and that slavery was not allowed.  Biddy Mason petitioned the courts and was given her freedom.  Read more about Biddy Mason’s journey in Epic Lives: One Hundred Black Women Who Made a Difference, edited by Jessie Carney Smith, Oscar L. Sims, Visible Ink Press, 1993. Also click here .

Did you know that a clever slave couple, William and Ellen Craft, traveled over 1000 miles from captivity in Macon, Georgia to Boston to freedom? Their escape was achieved when the fair skinned Ellen disguised herself as a White gentleman and her husband William who was dark-skinned played the part of her slave. Read their account of the journey in: Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom; or, The Escape of William and Ellen Craft From Slavery, by Ellen Craft & William Craft (Paperback - Nov 9, 2006). Did you know that many slaves were freed by way of the Underground Railroad, and that the Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad, but a secret passage in which slaves were assisted to freedom? Learn more by watching Underground Railroad (History Channel), by Alfre Woodard (DVD - Jan 28, 2003). Also click here .

Karyn –

I just wanted to send along sincere and eternal thanks for all you are doing to help create such positive media for all ages.  You understand the transformative power of storytelling – and making a tangible difference in bringing that power to many more children and grown up children.

If there is any way we can support you in your mission, please let me know.  The work you are doing is a blessing for so many … at a time we need it so dearly.

Cheering you on,

Paul Reynolds

Dear Karyn,

Thank you so much for the DVD-we received it this past week. I can't wait to show it to my class, but what is even more wonderful is that it has become a favorite of my own children - ages 5 and 3. They LOVE watching the story. The 5 year old understands a bit more of the story - and my 3 year old can tell you all about the bird and the mouse and what they say to "Henry Box".

Hello Mrs. Parsons,
You were recently at Salem Baptist Church of Chicago promoting the Sweet Blackberry DVD's. I was very impressed with your idea to provide our little ones with a piece of African-American history in a way they can relate to it. I'm a first grade teacher at an inner-city school in Chicago. One of the biggest problems I have with teaching younger students history is finding material that is age appropriate. Your company is definitely filling a void! I applaud your efforts.
