Sweet Blackberry's Garrett's
Gift tells the inspiring story of African
American inventor Garrett Morgan. Narrated by award-winning
actress and vocalist Queen Latifah, Garrett's
Gift teaches us that we are all born with
a gift, something that's ours alone, but what is most important
is that we give that gift back to the world.
Garrett's Gift is illustrated
by Coretta Scott King award-winner R. Gregory Christie,
with original music by Coati Mundi of Kid Creole
and the Coconuts. |

Anderson and I'm a twenty-three year old
female living near Seattle, WA who happened to overhear you talk about
Henry Box Brown's life over the radio (KUOW, 94.9 Seattle). I decided
to look it up on Google as soon as I got home and then I found out
it was for kids!...A link to a narrative of Henry Box Brown also popped
up and I decided to put that on my birthday list. …I love the
mission of your organization and think that it's wonderful that you
and your staff are working to educate young African American boys
and girls about African American men and women and heroes to us all.
I'm a Caucasian woman and have grown up in a predominantly white area,
but I've got more soul and perspective in my life thanks to the lessons
I've learned from my African American sisters and brothers… I will support your organization by word of mouth and I look forward
to reading that narrative as soon as possible.
Thanks for all your work and may God continue to bless your heart
and the work of your hands today and always.
With heartfelt gratitude,
Lindsay Anderson |

we received it this past week. I can't wait
to show it to my class, but what is even more wonderful is that it
has become a favorite of my own children - ages 5 and 3. They LOVE
watching the story. The 5 year old understands a bit more of the story
- and my 3 year old can tell you all about the bird and the mouse
and what they say to "Henry Box".

I enjoy watching you play as Hilary on "Fresh
Prince of Bel Air", but I believe that I am going to enjoy even
more the DVD of "Henry Box Brown." I think that this is
an excellent way of educating children AND adults alike about the
people in our heritage and the struggles that they went through to
gain the freedom that we enjoy today. I hope that there will be much
more to come. I certainly will share this with my children, my grandchildren,
and as many teachers, and other parents and grandparents that want
to give their children knowledge of our foreparents' struggle for
freedom. God bless you in your endeavors. Please put me on your mailing
list. I am anxious to know about future DVDs, movies, books, etc.

so much.
I'm sitting here watching this DVD again with Max (he watched it several
times yesterday after we opened the package) I cannot tell you how
much we are enjoying this - Max especially. I was actually moved to
tears, during the first screening, and then to read the bio on Henry
Box Brown--Oh my God!! Incredible.
As an African American parent I have been thinking a lot lately about
how to broach the subject of Slavery and racism to my biracial son.
At the moment, Max's world is idyllic and innocent, like most kids
his age. As an actress I've portrayed Rosa Parks for 2nd and 3rd graders
and have had to make her harrowing story and the Montgomery Bus Boycott
really kid friendly - not easy to do! This DVD is an excellent segue
for all kids and especially younger kids like Max.
Thanks to your story I was able to introduce the subject of slavery
to my son quite easily, and also to explain to him why he is having
a day off from school on Martin Luther King's birthday.
I wish you much success with this project and I look forward to seeing
your other pieces. I would like to lend it to Max's teacher so she
can show it to her class. I think it works as a great teaching tool.
I don't know what your distribution plans are but this would be perfect
for the Scholastic Book Club. At any rate, I plan on buying some more
copies!! Max wanted to know if there will be a CD with music to accompany
the DVD?
Anyway, congratulations and thanks again! "It's my favorite
movie..." says Max (without any coaching).
All the best to you and your family,
Melissa |

effort on karyn's part. As a mother myself I have a curious 4 year old who is now asking about race and why one of his grandmas is "brown" and the other is "yellow" and it is nice to see that we have something to teach our kids that involves our history aside from the regular MLK and Malcomn X stories because these should not be forgotten but the schools are not changing or adding anything that goes beyond that.
Thank you to Karyn and all those that take the time to do this.

and I turned to KJLH this morning and heard
about Sweet Blackberry for the first time. I am a mother of 3 and
I am so glad that someone is concerned about getting our stories out.
I learned all of my black history from the black church and now that
I have children of my own I want to make sure they know their history
as well.
My husband pastors a church in Compton, Ca and we are having our annual
Black History Program this Saturday Feb. 18th at 3:00 p.m. and I am
going to make sure that I mention your website. May God bless you
in your endeavor. I will visit the website often to see what else
you are doing and continue to spread the word.
Sincerely, Beth Berry |

You were recently at Salem Baptist Church
of Chicago promoting the Sweet Blackberry DVD's. I was very impressed
with your idea to provide our little ones with a piece of African-American
history in a way they can relate to it. I'm a first grade teacher
at an inner-city school in Chicago. One of the biggest problems I
have with teaching younger students history is finding material that
is age appropriate. Your company is definitely filling a void! I applaud
your efforts.

I agree whole heartedl
y with Karyn in regards to supplementing our children's knowledge of our history and slavery. I am the mother of two daughters, and I spend a great deal of time educating them on the truth's of our history and slavery. Thanks to Karyn I can now introduce my girls to a broader spectrum of who we are, where we come from, and how we were able to breakthrough the many barriers in our path. Thanks a million for sharing!
